“দু’হাজার বিশাল আগে রোমনগরী কেবল যে ইটালির সর্বাপেক্ষা সুদৃঢ় নগরী ছিল, তাই নয়, একটি বিশাল সাম্রাজ্যের কেন্দ্র হিসাবেও এটি দ্রুত গড়ে উঠছিল। এর কয়েকশ বছর অতীতে অবশ্য রোমান জাতিকে প্রায়শই নিজেদের নিরাপত্তার জন্য লড়াই করতে হত। অপর উপজাতিদের সঙ্গে মাঝে মাঝেই তাঁদের যুদ্ধে লিপ্ত হতে হত। অদূরবর্তী পাহাড়ের ওপর ওদের নগর ছিল। সমতলের সমৃদ্ধ ভূমিগুলি এরা সকলেই চাইতো নিজেদের দখলে আনতে। কিছুটা জয় করা গিয়েছিল এবং রোমরাজ্যের অন্তর্ভুক্ত হয়েছিল। বাকি অংশের জন্য রোমানরা একটি চুক্তি করেছিল, যাতে তারা বন্ধুভাবাপন্ন হয় এবং পরস্পরের সাহায্যে আসে।”
