Siliguri, 16 July:
Drug abuse among youth has emerged as a growing concern, particularly in border districts like Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar. Reports indicate an increase in use of substances like brown sugar, heroin, cough syrups, and ganja, often smuggled through porous international borders.
Unemployment, peer influence, social media glamorisation, and lack of recreational facilities contribute to the menace. Law enforcement has conducted raids, but experts argue that punitive action must be balanced with prevention — including counselling, life-skill education, and robust rehabilitation support.
The government is planning to expand de-addiction centres and run anti-drug clubs at school and college levels to address the issue at its root.
