Siliguri, 7 April:

According to NCRB data, cyber crime cases in India increased by over 70% between 2020 and 2023. Common threats include UPI frauds, ransomware, phishing emails, social media impersonation, and credit card theft.

In West Bengal, over 10,000 FIRs were filed in 2024 related to cyber fraud. Criminals use tools like fake customer care numbers, malicious links, and job scam portals to trap victims.

Despite the launch of helpline 1930, many victims fail to report on time. Most cyber crime units are under-resourced and lack trained digital forensic officers.

To fight this threat, the government has launched Cyber Suraksha programs, cyber awareness week in schools, and is proposing a National Cyber Crime Control Policy 2025.

Public must be educated about 2FA (two-factor authentication), phishing red flags, and safe browsing practices.
