Dengue Outbreak in West Bengal | WBCS Report Writing Topic 2025

Kolkata, 12 September:

West Bengal has been facing a severe dengue outbreak since the onset of monsoon. Districts like Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, and Hooghly have reported over 25,000 cases in 2025 alone. The crisis has overwhelmed municipal health services, with government and private hospitals struggling to provide beds and critical care.

Major causes include poor waste disposal, stagnation of water in urban slums, construction sites, and irregular fogging activities. The Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds in such water bodies, spreading the disease rapidly.

The government launched special drives involving health workers and ASHA personnel for door-to-door checks, awareness camps, and distribution of mosquito nets. Despite these, experts warn that unless urban planning improves and citizens actively participate, such outbreaks will recur annually.
