Bankura, 5 May:
With temperatures soaring beyond 45°C in parts of Bankura, Purulia, and Birbhum, heatstroke cases have seen an unprecedented rise. Schools have been shut, and advisories issued, but hospitals in rural areas remain ill-prepared. Most primary health centres (PHCs) lack cooling systems, ORS stock, and trained personnel to handle heat-related emergencies.
The state health department has initiated measures like mobile health units, free distribution of ORS packets, and awareness campaigns urging people to stay indoors during peak hours. However, the lack of infrastructure, particularly in tribal and remote pockets, has posed a significant challenge.
Experts highlight the urgent need for climate-resilient health planning — including shaded shelters, 24×7 ambulance service, and community-level heat preparedness training.
