Social Media and Fake News in India | WBCS Report Writing Current Topic

Malda, 15 February:
India, with over 750 million internet users, is among the largest consumers of social media—but also one of the worst-hit by fake news. In 2023 alone, over 200 reported incidents of violence in India were linked to fake social media posts.
Fake news on topics like vaccines, politics, religion, and natural disasters spreads rapidly via WhatsApp and Facebook. Deepfake videos and AI-generated texts are further complicating the issue.
While the IT Rules 2021 mandate content moderation, platforms often fail to act fast. Initiatives like PIB Fact Check and independent agencies like AltNews have emerged, but their reach is limited.
