Purulia, 25 June:
Several western districts of West Bengal, including Purulia, Bankura, and Jhargram, are currently facing severe drought-like conditions due to the delay in the southwest monsoon. Farmers are the worst affected, as they are unable to sow paddy and other seasonal crops due to the lack of rainfall.
Reports suggest that many ponds and reservoirs have dried up across the region. The shortage of drinking water and fodder is affecting both villagers and their livestock. In several villages, rural families have already begun migrating in search of water and livelihood.
Although the state administration has begun supplying water tankers and fodder, villagers claim that the relief is insufficient. The situation continues to deteriorate and may spiral out of control if rains do not arrive soon.
Despite the region being drought-prone for many years, no long-term solution has been implemented. Experts are calling for proper irrigation systems and sustainable water management to prevent such crises in the future.
