Kolkata, 23 June:
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to revolutionize the Indian education system by introducing a holistic, flexible, and skill-based learning structure. However, its implementation in West Bengal has been slow and met with several challenges.
The shift from the traditional 10+2 system to the 5+3+3+4 structure, emphasis on mother tongue instruction, and introduction of vocational training from early classes require major systemic changes. Most schools, especially in rural areas, lack the infrastructure and trained teachers to adopt the new model.
While some pilot projects have been launched, state-wide implementation is yet to begin effectively. There is also a lack of clarity on syllabus changes, language policy, and integration with state boards.
Educationalists believe that unless the state government collaborates with central agencies and invests in training and infrastructure, NEP 2020 will remain a distant dream for Bengal’s students.
