WBCS Report: Student Suicides & Mental Health in West Bengal

By Staff Reporter
Durgapur, 22 June:
A worrying rise in student suicides has raised serious concerns about the mental health of youth in West Bengal. Academic pressure, fear of failure, peer comparison, and lack of emotional support are some of the key reasons behind this tragic trend.

In several cases reported in Durgapur and Siliguri, students from reputed institutions took their own lives just after exam results or competitive failures. Mental health remains a neglected topic in most schools and colleges, where counseling services are either absent or underutilized.

Parents and teachers often focus solely on marks, ignoring the child’s emotional needs. With the growing use of social media, many students face cyberbullying and unrealistic expectations, which further affects their self-esteem.

Psychologists stress the need for regular mental health awareness sessions, student counseling programs, and a more empathetic education system that promotes emotional resilience along with academic success.
